D.C., Providence hotels change hands; luxury properties open in Dubai
In new of hotel openings and rebrandings this month, leading business hotels in Washington D.C. and Providence, R.I. will be taking on new identities; both Dubai and Manila get two new luxury properties with familiar brands; Four Seasons cuts the ribbon on its newest China location; and a W Hotel debuts in Thailand.
As part of an ongoing expansion into major markets, Loews Hotels has cut a deal to purchase the Madison Hotel in downtown Washington D.C. with plans to rebrand it as a Loews. The 356-room Madison, at 1177 15th St. NW—not far from the White House—recently went through a $23 million renovation ... In Rhode Island, meanwhile, the Westin Providence Hotel adjacent to the city’s convention center is being acquired by Omni Hotels & Resorts; it is expected the property will take on the Omni name ... In downtown Newark, N.J., there’s a new Courtyard by Marriott a few blocks from Penn Station—the city’s first new downtown hotel in more than 40 years ... The all-suite Strathallan Hotel in Rochester, N.Y. has become a DoubleTree by Hilton ... Hilton’s Hampton Hotels unit has cut the ribbon on the Hampton Inn & Suites Columbia/South in Columbia, Md., 15 miles from BWI ... The former Hilton Hotel in Pikesville, Md. off the Baltimore Beltway is now a DoubleTree by Hilton ... There’s a new Country Inns & Suites By Carlson in Savannah, Ga., located in the Savannah Gateway area off I-95 ... In Florida, there’s a new 300-suite Embassy Suites Orlando-Lake Buena Vista South in Kissimmee, near Disney World ... And in Miami, Menin Hotels has converted a 71-year-old structure in South Beach into the 87-room Gale and Regent South Beach.
In the Midwest, the Millennium Hotel Minneapolis has closed for a four-month, $20 million remodeling project ... Hampton Hotels has cut the ribbon on a new location in Iowa—the Hampton Inn Iowa City/University Area ... There’s also a new Hampton Inn this month in Oxford, Ohio near Miami University ... In Texas, Hilton opened the Hilton Garden Inn Houston NW/America Plaza, at 14919 Northwest Freeway ... And the former Hilton hotel at Houston’s Hobby Airport has been reflagged as a DoubleTree by Hilton ... Hilton’s Hampton Hotels also added a location in Phoenix; the Hampton Inn Phoenix-Biltmore is a conversion of the former Hotel Highland at Biltmore ... The most historic property in the Colorado resort town of Aspen—the Hotel Jerome—has reopened after a massive restoration project ... The Larkspur Union Square Hotel in downtown San Francisco has been purchased by Canadian investors and will be renamed the Cartwright Hotel, its original name ... In southern California, the formerly independent Hotel Hanford in Orange County is now part of InterContinental Hotels Group, and is called the Crowne Plaza Costa Mesa ... Hyatt has cut the ribbon on a new Hyatt Place in El Segundo, just south of LAX; it’s in the new Campus El Segundo, a mixed-use development next to the Metro Rail Green Line Mariposa/Nash Station.
Just west of San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Dorado Beach resort—with four golf courses and a mile of beach—has become a Ritz-Carlton .... There are three new hotels in San Jose, Costa Rica this month. Hyatt Hotels has opened the Hyatt Place San Jose/Pinares in the Pinares commercial complex on the east side of the city; and Wyndham Hotel Group debuted both the Wyndham Garden San Jose Escazu in the upscale suburb of Escazu, and the Wyndham San Jose Herradura Hotel & Conference Center minutes from the airport and downtown ... In Peru, an opening is expected by the end of the month for the Hilton Lima Miraflores, a 207-room property in the center of the capital city.
Overseas, two big new luxury hotels have opened in Dubai. One is the JW Marriott Marquis, which lays claim to being the world’s tallest hotel. It is opening in phases; its first tower of 804 rooms has started taking guests, and three restaurants are operating. By the end of next month, the hotel should have all nine restaurants and five bars open. The other opening is Fairmont Hotels’ Fairmont The Palm, located on the palm-tree-shaped manmade island called Palm Jumeirah; it has 381 rooms and suites, a big spa, and 37,700 square feet of meeting space ... India’s first Holiday Inn Express has opened in Ahmedabad.
The newest member of the Four Seasons group is the Four Seasons Hotel Beijing, a 313-room property in the city’s Liangmahe district. It has a spa, a 24-hour business center, executive club lounge, pool, fitness center, two restaurants (Cantonese and Italian) and three bars ... Elsewhere in China, Sheraton has added two more properties to its roster: The Sheraton Changchun Jingyuetan Hotel in the northern city of Changchun is part of the Jingyuetan Tourism Economic Development Zone; and the Sheraton Shanghai Waigaoqiao Hotel is in Shanghai’s Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone of Pudong New District ... China’s Hainan Island is home to the new Shangri-La Hotel, Haikou.
Starwood’s W Hotels has opened its newest Asian location in Bangkok. The W Bangkok has 407 rooms in a 31-story glass tower, and a location in the commercial district with direct access to the elevated Skytrain rail network ... In the Philippines, Manila’s upscale Makati financial district has a pair of new luxury properties: Raffles Hotels has cut the ribbon on a 30-story location with 32 suites, 110 apartments and 127 long-stay residences; and Fairmont Hotels opened the 280-room Fairmont Makati, which includes a premium-services Fairmont Gold section ... In Seoul’s financial district of Yeouido, Hilton Worldwide has opened the 434-room Conrad Seoul; it occupies one of the four towers of the IFC Seoul, a large commercial complex ... Members of Starwood’s Preferred Guest program or Marriott Rewards have new getaway options on the Indonesian island of Bali: A newly opened resort called The Stones Legian is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection; and Starwood’s Sheraton unit has opened the Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort on Kuta Beach.
In Europe, France’s Accor Group has cut the ribbon on an upscale Pullman Hotel in London, just a short walk from the Eurostar terminal at St. Pancras Station ... Three of Hilton’s Hampton Hotels in the U.K.—in Braintree, Shrewsbury and Birmingham—have been converted to the Holiday Inn Express brand ... Hampton Hotels has opened the 188-room Hampton by Hilton London Luton Airport a mile from the main terminal ... Hilton Worldwide’s Conrad Brussels in the Belgian capital is due to be reflagged as the Steigenberger Grand Hotel Brussels by year’s end ... Carlson Rezidor has a new Radisson Blu hotel in Nantes, France—an overhaul of the city’s 19th-century Palais de Justice ... And there’s a new Park Inn by Radisson outside the French city of Lille in the town of Villeneuve D’Ascq ... Farther east, the Accor Group has added a Hungarian hotel to its upscale MGallery brand—the historic Nemzeti Hotel in Budapest, which was renovated this year ...
