Toronto gets a new five-star property; two of France’s top hotels close
In news of hotel openings, closings and rebrandings this month, the busy lodging scene in Toronto welcomes another new luxury property; Wyndham adds 20 U.S. locations in a single month; two of the top hotels in France shut down for renovations; Vienna will add a Ritz-Carlton; and Four Seasons opens a new China location.
In North America, an August debut is expected for the Shangri-La Hotel, Toronto, occupying the first 17 floors of a 65-story tower on University Avenue at Adelaide Street. The luxury property promises some of the most spacious accommodations in the city; its 202 rooms will include 49 suites of 700 to 2,000 square feet; regular guest rooms are at least 500 square feet … Wyndham Hotel Group said it has rebranded 20 U.S. hotels owned by Hospitality Properties Trust this month. That gives the company four new Wyndham-branded hotels: the Wyndham Irvine-Orange County Airport in California; the Wyndham Atlanta Galleria; Wyndham Dallas Suites-Park Central; and Wyndham Houston West Energy Corridor. In addition, there are now Hawthorne Suites by Wyndham locations in Dallas; Meriden, Conn.; Farmington Hills, Mich.; Auburn Hills, Mich.; Blue Ash, Ohio; Louisville, Ky.; Altamonte Springs, Fla.; Greensboro, N.C.; Charlotte, N.C.; Raleigh, N.C.; Omaha, Neb.; Wheeling, Ill.; Schaumburg, Ill.; Hoffman Estates, Ill.; Centennial, Colo.; and Salt Lake City.
In New England, the former Radisson Inn in Hyannis, Mass., has been rebranded as the DoubleTree by Hilton Cape Cod … The former Marriott in Rocky Hill, Conn., this month becomes the Sheraton Hartford South; the company advises the hotel will undergo a renovation from October through April … In Philadelphia, there’s a new Homewood Suites by Hilton in the city’s University City district … A former Radisson property near Fort Belvoir in Alexandria, Va., is now the Candlewood Suites Alexandria … The trendy arts district of Pineapple Grove in Delray Beach, Fla., is the site of a new Hyatt Place hotel … What was the Northland Inn Hotel and Conference Center in suburban Brooklyn Park, Minn., is now the Minneapolis Marriott Northwest … There’s a new SpringHill Suites by Marriott in Denver; the downtown property is close to Metro State University, the convention center and local sports stadiums … There’s a new Residence Inn in Bismarck, N.D. … The former Embassy Suites in downtown Salt Lake City, a few blocks from Temple Square, has been rebranded as the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Salt Lake City… A former Clarion hotel in Millbrae, Calif., has been transformed into the Aloft San Francisco Airport, due to open at the end of August; it’s a half-mile from the terminals … The former Hotel La Jolla in La Jolla, Calif., near San Diego has been converted into a Kimpton property after a $4 million renovation … The Heathman Hotel in Kirkland, Wash. – on the east side of Seattle – reopened this month after closing down in May due to a water main break.
In Latin America, Mexico has welcomed a new Hampton Inn by Hilton in Guadalajara, located close to the Expo Guadalajara center and the airport … An August opening is slated for a new JW Marriott hotel in Cuzco, Peru, in the heart of the city’s historic district … The newly-built, 92-room TRYP by Wyndham Panama Centro opens this month in the center of Panama City, Panama … The French five-star chain Sofitel this month is due to cut the ribbon on the Sofitel Montevideo Casino Carrasco and Spa in Montevideo, Uruguay.
High-end business travelers to France will have to say good-bye to two of the country’s top hotels this month – for a while, at least. The world-renowned Ritz Hotel in Paris is shutting its doors for a $164 million renovation that will last through mid-2014; its last renovation was in 1979 … And on the Riviera, a similar rehab project has shuttered the InterContinental Carlton Cannes through February 2014 … London has a new luxury boutique hotel in the South Kensington district – the 111-room Ampersand, whose exterior dates to 1888 … A late August opening is slated for The Ritz-Carlton, Vienna – a 202-room hotel built into four 19th century palaces in the heart of the city along the famous Ring Boulevard; it also includes a Ritz-Carlton Club on the seventh floor, and a gourmet restaurant specializing in Austrian cuisine and wines … There's another new hotel in Istanbul this month, as Marriott has cut the ribbon on the 212-room Renaissance Istanbul Bosporus Hotel, located on the European side of the city in the Besiktas neighborhood.
Fairmont Hotels makes its debut in India this month with the opening of the 255-room Fairmont Jaipur; the luxury property reflects the stylings of a Mughal palace … Also due to open in India this month is Starwood’s ITC Grand Chola, a Luxury Collection Hotel, in Chennai … A small (86 rooms) new Best Western Orchid Hotel opens this month in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, close to major companies and government agencies …In China, what’s on the top 30 floors of the 103-story Guangzhou International Finance Center? The newly opened Four Seasons Hotel Guangzhou. It has six dining and entertainment venues, along with 302 rooms and 42 suites, and it’s next door to the Guangzhou Opera House … Elsewhere in China, there’s a new 389-room DoubleTree by Hilton in Shenyang; Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group has opened a new Radisson Blu hotel in Chongqing; and an August 20 debut is planned for a new Sheraton hotel in Fuzhou, close to the new conference and expo center … Japan’s Okura Hotels has opened the 208-room Okura Prestige Taipei in Taiwan; it’s in the city’s Zhongshan district … France's Accor Group has opened the Novotel Saigon Centre in District 1 of Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) … Two Australian hotels are changing brands this month: In Sydney, The Observatory Hotel near the central business district is now a member of Langham Hotels; and in Brisbane, the Holiday Inn has become the first Traders Hotel – a part of Shangri-La – in the country … In Auckland, New Zealand, the former MGallery Hotel – an Accor brand – is now a Sofitel.
