Openings in NYC, D.C., Silicon Valley; Four Seasons exits Tokyo

In news of hotel openings, closings and rebrandings this month, Hyatt adds a New York City location; a small luxury property debuts in the nation’s capital; Nobu comes to Las Vegas; Silicon Valley marks a pair of openings; Four Seasons loses its Tokyo location; Brussels and Berlin get new business hotels; and China adds several more properties.

In New York City, a January 28 debut is scheduled for the Hyatt Place New York/Midtown-South, located on West 36th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues, near the Empire State Building. It has a 24-hour guest kitchen with made-to-order meals and snacks, as well as free hot breakfast daily ... The Georgetown section of Washington D.C. is the site of a new Capella Hotel that opens this month; the luxury 92-room Capella has a premium restaurant as well as a guests-only rooftop pool and bar ... In Plainsboro, N.J., less than 15 minutes from Princeton University, a portion of the Wyndham Princeton has been converted into the new Holiday Inn Express Princeton Southeast ... Another Holiday Inn Express has opened seven miles east of Pittsburgh in Munhall, Pa. ... Hilton’s Hampton Hotels unit has added a Hampton Inn & Suites in Limerick, Pa., between Reading and Philadelphia; and another one in downtown Raleigh, N.C. on Glenwood Ave. ... A January debut is set for a Holiday Inn Express in downtown Charleston, S.C. ... In downtown Atlanta at 97 10th Street is a new 12-story building that combines a Hilton Garden Inn and a Homewood Suites under one roof... Hilton cut the ribbon on a Hampton Inn & Suites in Ocala, Fla. ... In Tampa, the 521-room Hyatt Regency Tampa has been temporarily renamed the Hotel Tampa, and has started renovations; when they are finished, it will become the Hilton Tampa Downtown.

The Sutton Place Hotel in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood has closed its doors and is undergoing a massive makeover before reopening later this year as the Thompson Chicago, part of Thompson Hotels ... Ohio’s Toledo Blade newspaper reports that the Toledo Hilton, on the campus of the University of Toledo Medical Center, is no longer affiliated with Hilton ... Down south, a January 31 debut is slated for a new Westin hotel in Birmingham, Ala., located at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Center in the Uptown Entertainment District ... InterContinental Hotels group added a new Hotel Indigo in New Orleans’ Garden District; it’s a former Clarion that went through a $17 million, two-year renovation ... According to local media reports in Little Rock, Ark., the city’s Peabody Hotel has been sold to new owners, who plan to renovate it and convert it to a Marriott ... The Cornhusker Hotel in Lincoln, Nebraska has become a Marriott property through a new affiliation with the brand.

In Texas, the Emily Morgan Hotel in San Antonio—across from The Alamo in the historic downtown area—has joined the Hilton family under the DoubleTree brand ... There’s a new Country Inn & Suites by Carlson in Lubbock, Tex., six miles from downtown off I-27 ... The former Super 8 at Denver International Airport is now a Red Lion Inn & Suites ... Nobu Hospitality, whose partners include Chef Nobu Matsuhisa and actor Robert De Niro, has expanded beyond the restaurant business by opening a luxury hotel in Las Vegas. It’s actually a hotel-within-a-hotel; Nobu’s 181 rooms and suites are inside the massive Caesars Palace complex, and it offers high-tech touches like in-room iPad registration.

Starwood Hotels is opening two new properties in California’s Silicon Valley area on January 17. In San Jose, Starwood will cut the ribbon on a 208-room Four Points by Sheraton, located at 399 Silicon Valley Boulevard; it has an outdoor pool and free shuttle service to San Jose Airport and to companies within a three-mile radius ... Meanwhile, Starwood’s trendy Aloft brand is opening its doors at 10165 North De Anza Boulevard in Cupertino, Calif., next to Apple headquarters ... The former Larkspur Mill Valley Hotel in Mill Valley, Calif.—five miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge—has been converted into a Holiday Inn Express ... Radisson’s Park Inn brand has opened a 246-room property in Covina, Calif., east of Los Angeles ... Kimpton Hotels has added its second location in Los Angeles with the acquisition of the 74-room Wilshire Hotel, on Wilshire Boulevard near Beverly Hills ... A January 31 debut is slated in Toronto for the 65-story Trump International Hotel and Tower, located at Bay and Adelaide streets ... In Latin America, there’s a new Westin Panama in Panama City’s Costa del Este development.

Fujita Kanko, the owner of the Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo, has removed the luxury property from the Four Seasons brand and is now operating the hotel itself under the new name Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo. The company plans to spend $90 million renovating and upgrading the hotel over the next few years ... There are plenty of new hotels in China this month. Hilton Hotels has opened a new property in the Pearl River Delta—the 459-room Hilton Zhongshan Downtown, in that city’s central business district ... Hilton also cut the ribbon on a DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Putian, across the street form the new government center there ... Shangri-La opened its 35th property in China, the 369-room Shangri-La Yangzhou in Jiangsu Province ... Starwood has added a pair of Four Points by Sheraton hotels in China—one in Langfang, southeast of Beijing; and another in Taizhou ... France’s luxury Sofitel group has cut the ribbon on the Sofitel Shenyang Lido Hotel in Shenyang.

Hyatt has taken its Hyatt Place brand to India for the first time with the debut of the Hyatt Place Hampi, a 115-room property in Karnataka; it plans to add another 20 or so Hyatt Places in India in the months ahead ... There’s a new Courtyard by Marriott at Kochi Airport, the first Marriott property in the south Indian state of Kerala ... In Jordan, Best Western has added the 70-room Best Western Grand Hotel Madaba in Madaba, about 14 miles south of Amman ... France’s Sofitel group has a new property in West Africa—the Sofitel Abidjan Hotel Ivoire, in the Cocody district of Abidjan, capital of Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) ... In Turkey, Istanbul continues its hotel boom with three more openings—the 210-room Wyndham Istanbul Kalamsi Marina, on the Asian side; the 10-story TRYP by Wyndham in the Taksim district; and the DoubleTree by Hilton Istanbul-Avcilar, on the western side of the city near its historic old town.

Hilton has brought its luxury Waldorf Astoria brand to Germany with the opening of the Waldorf Astoria Berlin, a 232-room property within the city’s new 32-story Zoofenster skyscraper near the Kaiser-Wilhelm memorial church and the Kurfurstendamm. It features a spa and a restaurant operated by French chef Pierre Gagnaire ... Steigenberger Hotels has cut the ribbon on the 269-room Steigenberger Grand Hotel in Brussels, located close to the Royal Palace; it’s built behind the facade of an historic building in the Wiltcher’s Complex along Avenue Louise ... InterContinental Hotels Group has a new Hotel Indigo in London, in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea at Earl’s Court ... In the Paris suburb of Neuilly, the Courtyard Paris Neuilly has become the Movenpick Hotel Paris Neuilly ... In the Netherlands, there’s a new Holiday Inn Express in The Hague, next to the U.S. Embassy ... France’s Novotel group has opened a four-star hotel in Sofia, Bulgaria three miles from the city’s airport.
