Oneworld adds passenger benefits, new member carrier
The global Oneworld alliance—which includes American Airlines, British Airways, Japan Airlines and others—has introduced some new perks for its most frequent flyers, and also added another airline member this month.
The additional benefits are for passengers who have attained Oneworld Emerald status—the highest elite level. That includes American’s AAdvantage Executive Platinum members, British Airways Executive Club Gold members, JAL Mileage Bank Diamond and JAL Global Club Premier members.
New perks include an extra allowance for checked baggage, above and beyond the allowable limits for the given cabin class. The extra allowance, good for travel on any member airline, is either one additional item on airlines that use a per-piece policy, or an extra 20 kg. (44 pounds) for those using the weight concept.
In addition, Oneworld Emeralds will get access to fast-track airport security lanes “when flying from select key airports worldwide on select Oneworld member airlines,” the group said.
Emeralds already earn mileage and tier status points on any member airline, have access to first and business class lounges, get priority boarding and wait-listing, and access to preferred seating.
Meanwhile, Oneworld said that Malaysia Airlines this month has officially joined the alliance, as scheduled. Malaysia, based in Kuala Lumpur, operates a fleet of 88 planes to 60 cities in 30 countries. It connects with other Oneworld member airline hubs at Hong Kong, London Heathrow, Los Angeles, Sydney and Tokyo Narita.
