Drug Tourism Halted in Amsterdam Coffee Shops

Coffee shops in the Netherlands, famous for selling cannabis in small quantities to patrons—including tourists—will stop that practice entirely beginning next year. The country passed a law that will effectively turn its 670 licensed coffee shops into private clubs with no more than 2,000 members, all of whom must be over 18 and legal residents of the country. Maastricht was a popular destination for some 1.4 million “drug tourists” every year from Germany, France and Belgium, among other countries. Prostitution, however, is still legal and regulated in the Netherlands.
