Best way to spend a free hour

Central Market, adelaideAnyone with a nose for fine aromas should visit the Adelaide Central Market (on Gouger Street), the oldest continuously operating market in Australia, open since 1870. It is said to have the largest range of fresh food produce in the southern hemisphere and one of the best ranges of international foods in Australia. Market days are Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

For a guided tour of the market, there are few market characters as well known and respected as Mark Gleeson, of Providore (Chef’s Market Tours, 0402 165 800, ). Gleeson uses his vast knowledge of South Australia’s produce to expose locals and tourists to the finest food and wine that the state has to offer.

Best weekend trip to add on after a business trip

Barossa Valley, AdelaideRent a car and drive to the Barossa Valley to taste some of the most famous shiraz wines in the world. The Barossa is Australia’s richest and best-known viticultural and winemaking region. Comprising the Barossa and Eden valleys, it is located one hour north of the city of Adelaide. The Barossa’s appeal is that it is much more than a wine region—it is a multi-layered cultural destination with great tradition, creative energy and community pride.

Purchasing a Cellar Door Pass (+61 08 8359 3492) will come in handy if you are exploring the region on your own. This is an excellent value and hits some of the top wineries in each region.

Or go the carefree way and have Life Is a Cabernet (+61 08 8396 2233), a private touring company, transport you.
