Air Canada offers assistance -- for a price

Carrier will sell travel help as a fare option

Air Canada, which has become known for letting passengers select “a la carte options” with their basic air fares – paying only for those services they know they will want and need – has added another option to the menu. Called “On My Way,” it’s a comprehensive travel assistance service that will help passengers rearrange their travel plans in the event of flight delays or other travel disruptions “beyond the control of airlines.” Buyers will have access to a round-the-clock phone line where special customer service agents will, “in the event of a flight disruption at anytime within 48 hours of scheduled departure,” rebook the customer on the first available flight on Air Canada, Jazz, or another airline; arrange complimentary hotel accommodations, car rental or other ground transportation; and provide for complimentary meals. In addition, Air Canada will send automatic flight information updates by SMS text and email, the company said. What does it cost to add “peace of mind” to your ticket? It’s $25 (U.S. or Canadian) for flights up to 1,000 miles or $35 for longer flights.
