History: AirTran’s origins lie the 1997 merger of two small, low cost airlines with a similar fleet strategy and focus on low fares. AirTran would likely have an all Boeing 717 fleet except that Boeing stopped making the original Macdonald-Douglas design a few years back.. So AirTran began purchasing new 737 aircraft from Boeing to further their growth and currently has one of the youngest fleets of any US carrier.
