Iowa airport sees a bright side in questionable three-letter code

According to press reports from Iowa last week, local officials in Sioux City have finally given up on a decades-long attempt to change the three-letter code of their municipal airport, and instead will focus on the controversial code as part of a new marketing campaign for the facility. The code is SUX. City leaders reportedly petitioned the FAA in 1988 and again in 2002 for a new code, but they didn’t like any of the alternatives proposed by the agency – which reportedly included GWU, GYO, GYT, SGV and GAY. So officials are now seeing a silver lining instead of a cloud, adopting “Fly SUX” as the airport’s new marketing slogan, and redesigning its website at www.flysux.com.
