Despite their denials, news reports indicate Delta and United may be discussing a merger, which would create the nation’s largest airline – reportedly to operate under United’s identity (see this week’s story). Absolutely not. Strategically, Continental is a better fit for United with its Houston and Newark hubs complimenting United's route structure very nicely. Delta and Northwest make a lot more sense, and would be easier to pass through regulators, even though Delta might have to spin off its Cincinnati hub. Also, Delta and Northwest are in the same global alliance.
