Cell phones in flight?
Mar 26 2007, 10:14 AM EDT
The head of the Federal Communications Commission said the FCC’s ban on in-flight cell phone use aboard airliners is likely to remain in place, since the agency hasn’t been convinced such activity won’t interfere with ground-based cell networks. Do you think cell phone usage should be banned in flight? Or do consider the ability to make and receive cell calls in the air to be an important tool for business travelers who spend much of their time flying? 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I can't stand the use of cell phones when we are on the ground and their use in the air is unthinkable. I take 250+ flights a year and even though I am busy too, I can wait to make my calls in private without barking away on the plane so everyone can hear my business. I would approve for an all out ban....people continue to talk and use PDA's even after the doors are closed. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I don't see how a couple hours will make the difference of someone despirately needing to be on the phone! If that is the case, than that’s poor planning on someone’s part. I get enough cell phone talk when I'm trying to eat, and I can only imagine what it's going to be like with someone screaming over the jet engine noise! Thank God for BOSE headsets!!

Continue the ban - it would make for quite an annoying flight to have someone yammering on the phone the whole way through. We've gone this long without it and managed, no matter how busy someone is, I bet the conversation can wait until they're on firm ground. Keep the ban! Do you find this valuable?

Cell phone use in the air would be extremely disruptive to those who are trying to work or study using books or computers. Cell phone use should never be allowed on airplanes.

I would ban them all the time on planes. It is bad enough having to overhear people yelling on their phones prior to suhtting the door, without the ban flying would be REAL torture.

They should also ban them in cars.

I think it's fantastic that cell phones are banned. I can only image what it would be like to have people yelling on their phones in crowded conditions on planes. 'Plane rage' will make 'road rage' look like a tea party. Do you find this valuable?

I find it offensive when a cell phone user airs his or her private business aloud (usually very loud). Can you possibly imagine that person as a seatmate in an airplane. Air travel produces enough agita without that!

As an airline employee I can see no redeeming value of having the person next to me or another customer talking non stop on a flight. If the cell phones in fllight passed I truly believe it would take the frustration level of flying to a new level which could result in an ever increasing escalation of anamosity on the aircraft. Totally agree-poor planning if you cannot wait two hours for a phone call- even less as they allow cell phines and PDA's upon landing! Do you find this valuable?

Thank Goodness for the Continued Ban

For security reasons, passengers are discouraged from moving about the cabin. Being stuck next to a person on a cell phone would be a living hell--there would be little or no escape! I'm concerned the number of "air rage" incidents will increase if passengers are allowed to talk on their cell phones throughout the flight. Do you find this valuable?

Absolutely the LAST thing I want is phones in flight. It is bad enough in airline clubs when some clown starts letting the whole room know just how important he is at the top of his voice making call after call. Do you find this valuable?

Best news I have heard yet. I need the peace while in the plane. Gives me time to think and prepare for the job at hand. I hope they never allow cell phones on planes. Do you find this valuable?

Since the lead in to your questions talks about the "technical" aspects of in-flight cell phones usage, I feel that I, along with 99.9% of rest of the general public, have no business even attempting to answer these questions, once again, on a technical basis. Now, if want the general public to pontificate on the in-flight cell phone usage WITH THE ASSUMPTION it would not technically interfere with the critical ground-base and air communications, then that's a total different scenario. Given that, I'm in agreement with just about every response thus far. Short of official personnel in an emergency situation, the last thing I want to be subjected to is someone talking non-stop on their cell phone. Some people are just clueless about their surroundings and the rudeness they create by talking on their cell phones in public. If the general public and/or airlines really want to have in-flight cell phone usage, the only way I can see (hope) this would happen is if the airlines were to partition off and designate a special section of the plane where cell phones can be used, otherwise, turn the phone off and do whatever you normally do on a plane. .... Read a book, magazine, newspaper, write a letter, take a nap, watch the in-flight movie, meditate, talk to your travel mate or neighbor, play cards, etc.
