United's new ground delay policy
Jun 4 2007, 9:51 AM EDT
United set a new policy for lengthy ground delays: Persons who sit on the tarmac for at least four hours on a departing flight (or 90 minutes after landing) will get a note of apology, a $10 airport dining voucher and a 20 percent discount on a future coach flight. What do you think of United’s policy? Post your comments here. (If you want to be quoted by name, add your name to your comments.) Do you find this valuable?

4 HOURS!!!! A note of appology!!!!!
It's way too little. After an hour they should let you off the damn plane. Have the planes take a number in the order they were waiting and then lboard again and get back on the runway in that order. And then they can give the rest of that stuff and a seat on another airline if available. Or in some cases a free car rental. Some times you could drive to your destination in less than 4 hours.

4 Hours? The voucher and note should be after only 1 hour, 25% or a free companion ticket(plus the note & voucher) for the second, anything longer without an imminent takeoff, BACK TO THE GATE ! I like the first comment which has the takeoff order retained. Why airlines and airports have planes lined up nose-to-tail like on the highway is inexcusable. Holding areas exist on most ramps, so move the departing plane off so you can get arriving planes to a gate, but only send planes to the runway when takeoff is actually scheduled. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Sitting on a tarmac for four hours is WAY beyond "the punishment" air travelers have to endure these days. It is already bad enough that the seats are smaller and jammed closer together. It is very difficult to get down the aisle and aisle passengers are continuously be bumped by those going back and forth, some just to stretch their legs. Now they want us to accept their "New Ground Delay Policy" that doesn't come near the value of the loss of time one may have, plus the lack of food, drink, and facilities! The amount they are offering is a pittance to what they should be offering in a situation that long. Further more the airport authority should not allow a plane full of passengers to remain on the tarmac that long. It should be their responcibility to make sure they are off, or able to get off after a certain amount of time. Would it be possible to leave the gate at the last minute before take off or at least stay in range of the terminal so astairs could be brought up to the plane. Think of the feul that might be saved!

I find United policy to be ludicrous. They are trying to put a band aid on the problem. The problem needs to be fixed, not tolerated. Four hours trapped inside an aiplane sitting on the ground is simply not acceptable. One hour maximum would be acceptable to me. After that, the suggested ammentities might be acceptable. They need to fix the problem, not cover it up. Remember, why people fly. Do you find this valuable?

$10 for a four hour delay is $2.50 an hour. Isn't the minimum wage now $7.15? Maybe if they pay me "back dues" for all the delays during the "summer of hell" I would think they are interested in customer satisfaction. Do you find this valuable?

Their compensation, if you wish to call it that, is completely inadequate. Notes of apology don't cut it. Food vouchers should be no less than $20, as $10 at the airport doesn't buy you much but a bad sandwich, but what good does a food voucher do you if you're sitting on the tarmac trapped in one of their cramped aircraft. The 20 percent discount on a future coach flight is a slap in the face. It should be one free flight for a four hour delay. Ground delays would disappear if United and others would stop scheduling 20 flights to all depart at the same time. Solution - avoid United like the plague! They're still one of the worst managed and worst run airlines in the world! Then you won't have to deal with these and other insults. Do you find this valuable?

4 Hours is way too long, 90 min should be MAX. $10 Voucher is no good sitting on the tarmac. A note of apoligy, insulting. and a 20 % discount is not worth much, esp after we are allowed to read the fine print. Some of the problem is the airports and FAA. NO one is taking responsibility to fix it, it is always the other groups problem and no one but the passenger seems to care!!!

Seriously inadequate and insulting. No one should EVER have to sit in a plane on the tarmac for 4 hours. Ever. Do you find this valuable?
