As I understand it, NWA had over 200 flights it had to cancel for the week in question, as they had a number of weather related delays and cancellations the prior 2 weeks and, per FAA regulations, pilots are limited to 100 hours a month, and per NWA contract 90 hours. They simply ran out of hours and had no extra standby pilots on the payroll. This week they have reportedly called back over 400 furloughed pilots, while at the same time down sizing its flight schedule. Albeit, I saw a report that over 200 furloughed pilots are not ready to come back, at this time. NWA, is out of bankruptcy and ready to grow and compete with the low cost carriers and is a major player on the Asian routes. It has also purchased a small airline, while in Bankruptcy and started up a new one, called "Compass" (don't understand that too much...) . Now with employee profit sharing and other incentives, the 200 flight cancellation was probably "THE" low point for NWA and it will be upwards and onward from here with clear skys ahead. I flew NWA to Bangkok, and back, in June, with no problems (however, every seat was taken and all the flights too--need to add a lot more capacity) and their Worldperk miles never expire.
