History: American Airlines, the world’s largest airline both in terms of revenue and capacity, is also one of the oldest existing US air carriers. Founded in 1930 as a consolidation of various small early airline companies such as Embry Riddle, Universal Air and Interstate, American Airlines was an early industry leader and innovator, flying the world’s first commercial DC-3 trip from Chicago to New York and later flying the first coast to coast jet service with the introduction of Boeing 707’s. In the pre-deregulation era, American’s growth was limited to North American service as US long-haul was the exclusive domain of Pan Am and TWA. However, post industry deregulation, American quickly grew to become the more global carrier it is today. In 1979 American moved its headquarters from New York to Dallas and there are still many ex-New Yorkers working down in the Southwest for American today. In 1981, American Airlines changed the landscape of airline marketing forever with the introduction of the first frequent flyer program which the called AAdvantage. Today, American Airlines has the distinction of not only being one of the surviving and enduring brands of US aviation but also one of very few major US airlines to have never filed frofor bankruptcy protection.

What’s new? · American has announced a renewed focus on the New York market, with increased service, new routes and the promise of on-going market specific offers and promotions throughout 2007. New routes include non-stop service from JFK to Las Vegas (9/05/07) and LaGuardia to Cincinnati (4/10/07), Louisville (9/5/07) and Raleigh/Durham (4/10/07). American has announced new service from Chicago O’Hare International Airport to Moscow’s Domodedovo International Airport starting June 2, 2008. ·
The Carrier is in the midst of upgrading seats and entertainment in its International First and Business Class Cabins. New, fully adjustable lie flat Business Class seats with improved personal video and audio entertainment devices are being installed throughout the 767-300 fleet throughout 2007. American is also upgrading the First Class with state of the art pod-like seat units that convert into a lie flat bed for long haul flights. Industry buzz says that these First Class seating areas are some of the best in the industry for comfort and convenience in-flight.

Who Knew? · Every American Airlines employee received stock options in return for wage givebacks in 2003 that have since soared as much as tenfold in value. That should create a smile when they next greet you on board! ·
