Avoiding blood clots
How to keep your blood pumping at 30,000 feet
Stay active in your tiny plane seat? It is possible, according to Northwest Airlines. They suggest exercises like these to stave off deep vein thrombosis. Check out more at nwa.com/travel/tips/tips.html.
FOOT LIFTS: Place your heels on the floor and bring your toes up as high as you can. Then put both feet back flat on the floor. Pull your heels up while keeping the balls of your feet on the floor. Do this exercise in a series of 30 seconds each.
KNEE LIFTS: While keeping your knee bent, raise your leg while tensing your thigh muscle. Then do the same with your other leg. Repeat 20 to 30 times.
For additional details see this story that NPR broadcast on August 8, 2007 aboutblood clots and deep vein thrombosis relating to flying,

There was a full story about this on Morning Edition on NPR this morning. I'll post a link on the wiki page above.

I've been doing this on recent flights and it does actually get the circulation flowing... but one should probably alert their seat mates first, lest they think you are having a spasm:)
