Design flaws: Rental cars

These are some of the things that burn up business travelers about rental cars.

Cars that require holding the door-unlock switch on the driver’s side to open the trunk.

Cars that automatically lock all doors when put in drive, but only unlock the driver’s door when returning to park (which can be irritating when retrieving bags from the back seat).

Gas-tank doors that open with a hard-to-find lever or require pushing the door itself to open (with no visual indication of this).

Difficulty finding out how to open the trunk (especially when luggage was placed in it, because the trunk was open when picking up the car).

No owner’s manual provided with a rental car.

Rental cars with nonstandard controls.

Trying to figure out how to start a Toyota Prius or any rental car with keyless start, with no help from the rental-car company.

When the key-lock controls on the driver’s door and key fob have different functions: One is activated by a single click and another is activated by holding down for a longer (but indeterminate) time.
