Expanding SFO

San Francisco plans to renovate, reopen Terminal 2

At San Francisco International, the airport’s commissioners have voted to take bids on the renovation of SFO’s dormant Terminal 2, which has been closed for seven years, according to the San Francisco Business Journal. The terminal, which served as SFO’s international building before the new International terminal opened, is said to be needed since traffic at the airport has picked up considerably in the past few years. Once a contractor is selected, the 14-gate Terminal 2, currently used only for some administrative offices, would reportedly take two and a half years to renovate and reopen, at an estimated cost of $250 million. IN recent months, the number of airlines operating at SFO has increased to 40 with the arrival of low-cost carriers JetBlue, Southwest and the new Virgin America.
