Italian immigrants began to arrive massively in Sao Paulo state at the end of the nineteenth century.
At first they were brought as workmanship for the coffee plantations. However, the 20th century's industrial development attracted new waves of Italian immigrants to Sao Paulo city.
The Italian neighbourhood holds one of the largest Italian communities outside of Italy itself. It also has important theater venues and a vibrant nightlife.
