LAX to add more gates for the first time in 25 years

The City Council of Los Angeles has voted to move ahead with construction of 10 new gates at Los Angeles International Airport – the first new gates there in a quarter of a century. The plan is in part a response to a trend in recent years for international airlines to skip LAX in favor of other western gateways like San Francisco when they add U.S. service. The new gates will be capable of handling even the largest new aircraft models, including the mammoth Airbus A380. The gates will occupy a new structure to be built just west of the airport’s existing Bradley International Terminal, with access to be provided by an underground people mover. The Bradley Terminal is itself undergoing a $724 million overhaul, and part of that will include two new gates that are also A380-capable.
