SkyTeam carriers will consolidate at Heathrow
With the opening of London Heathrow’s new Terminal 5 – the new hub for British Airways – only a few weeks away, the global SkyTeam alliance has announced plans to consolidate all of its member airlines’ LHR operations in Terminal 4. That terminal is itself getting a $194 million expansion and renovation due to be finished in the spring of 2009. That’s also how long it will take for all the SkyTeam airlines to move there. The improvement program will include the installation of common-use self service kiosks where passengers can check in with any of the 10 SkyTeam airlines; an increased number of check-in desks; and more locations for dropping off checked baggage. “The greater number and common-use feature of the kiosks will help improve passenger flow through the terminal, reduce congestion, and reduce operating costs for member airlines,” a spokesman said. The first airlines to move into Terminal 4 – already used by SkyTeam’s KLM and Kenya Airways -- will be the alliance’s U.S. members: Continental, Delta and Northwest. They will move there by the end of March 2008, the alliance said. By the spring of 2009, they will be joined by Aeroflot, Air France, Alitalia, CSA and Korean Air.
