With brighter, longer days on the way, it’s the season to look toward the lighter side of dressing up.

A solid, light tan or light brown suit brings many options, making it great for travel. You can coordinate a patterned blazer with the trousers, or pair the trousers with a polo for casual time. Even though you might not think of taking a lighter-colored suit on the road, it will also give you more breadth in your fashion options. Pair the trousers with a blue blazer for a casual look, or wear it with a colorful polo for a night out with the guys.

  • When wearing light tan or khaki-colored suits, always opt for brown shoes and a matching belt. And ditch the black socks. Go for light browns and tans or pale colors that subtly coordinate with your shirt or tie.

  • If you pick a linen suit, resolve yourself to the fact that it’s going to wrinkle. While the fabric breathes in hot climates, be sure to pack it in your suitcase, as it might not be the best option to wear on a plane trip.

  • For every tie you pack, take two coordinating shirts—one solid and one patterned. That way, no one will remember you wore the same tie just a couple of days ago.

  • As soon as you check into your hotel, call the concierge to have your suit pressed. And while you’re at it, get your shoes shined.

  • No frequent traveler should be without a stain emergency kit. Shout Wipes, $2.79 a dozen at drugstore.com, work miracles on marinara and coffee stains.
