We had such a good time in New Orleans in Feb that we just decided to book another long weekend in November. The people are wonderful, the food, drink and music are like no where else... it's the perfect short escape. The french quarter is in tact and it feels great to contribute to the local economy. Even better when it's booked free with Delta miles and Hilton points... lets us spend even more in local establishments!!

I'd recommend my hometown as a long-weekend escape for folks living on the East Coast and on over to Atlanta. A direct flight from LaGuardia, Atlanta or Charlotte, Savannah, GA is balmy and blooming during the spring. The City provides entertainment but can also serve as a quiet getaway. Take a tour of our historic district, have a good meal and hear some music. Or, snooze over a book in a sunny garden and wander shady squares. Savannah is a wonderful weekend (or weeklong) escape in either spring or fall. There are lots of new hotels in the historic district, so plenty of nice places to stay.

A terrific summer long weekend to escape the maddening crowds of New York is to head to Shelter Island on the East End of Long Island. While is sits right next to the trendy and crowded Hamptons scene, the 3 minute ferry ride required to get on the Island makes it a world away. Once there you will be forced to slow down to the pace of the locals, many who descended from countless generations of residents. Stay at the tres chic Sunset Beach Resort and have the beach right across the street or chose something a little more traditional like the historic Chequit Inn in the old harbor town of Shelter Island Heights. A recent spat of new restaurants has reinvigorated the dining scene on the Island. Other fun activities include biking through the islands relatively empty roads. You will quickly forget the worries of your job once you get on the ferry and leave the rest of the world behind.

Just about 3 hrs from NYC is the quaint and exciting city of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Nestled between strip malls and Outlets are Amish farms, cows, silos of corn, horse drawn carriages and home made quilts and jams. The air is fresh, shops are plentiful and fresh foods are easily available if 'family style' eating is to your liking. Using Petswelcome.com we've been able to locate a hotel in Lancaster which allows us to bring our doggie with us. A good time for all.

The wineries of Long Island are a gem of a quick getaway without flight delays. Also, take a detour to the Hamptons in winter. Restaurants are less crowded, Bed & Breakfasts are welcoming, a true relaxing time right in our own
backyard. (almost..)

There are so many amazing places to have a romantic getaway outside the city. The Berkshires are beautiful at any time of year, Red Hook has a great place, and this weekend I'm trying out Taylor's Corner in Woodstock, CT where the rooms have fireplaces and it's a 20 minute drive to Sturbridge, MA for a colonial experience.

Sometimes I love to "get-away" by staying in NYC when everyone else goes away. No lines or waits at good restaurants, clubs, etc.
Other close b cities (philadelphia, etc.) is also a good winter escape.

Montauk, on the very tip of Long Island, is beautiful in the summer but also gorgeous in the winter. The beaches are amazing, it's fun to watch the die-hard surfers in their wet suits (how they tolerate the frigid water is a mystery) and there are lovely ways to pass the day--get a massage, poke around in the bookstore, eat pancakes at Mr. John's, tool around the Hamptons, etc.

I've always loved New Orleans, but now is a great time to visit. My husband and I were there last weekend. Three nights is the perfect trip. The French Quarter is very much in tact. It does not show signs of hurricane damage like the outer residential areas do. Contributing to the local economy is a great excuse to eat, drink and tip big! With Mardi Gras coming there was a big effort going on to paint, make repairs and plant trees. The residents of NOLA have a spirit unlike any other.... we'll fly there for a long weekend anytime.

I love to head up to places like Mt. Snow or Killington and enjoy a long weekend on the slopes! Even if you don't like to ski or snowboard, there's other fun winter activities to enjoy, like snowmobiling and tubing. Plenty of nightlife, too, for an apres-ski drink.

Not much snow this year, but it almost doesn't matter, when you're staying at the Plumpjack. It's in in the heart of Squaw's village: walk to the lifts. Plumpjack has its own little equipment rental shop--so you can avoid the lines at the village rental. And the food/ambiance can't be beat. Upper level rooms can be unbearably overheated during the winter.
