Carrier will dropin-flight entertainment to save money

Here’s a new twist on the airlines’ continuing quest for ways to cut costs: US Airways will remove the in-flight entertainment systems from its domestic fleet of Airbus planes this fall, ending in-flight movies and music for passengers. The Philadelphia Inquirer cites airline officials as blaming the excess weight for the decision: The hardware for the entertainment systems weighs about 500 pounds. Airline officials also noted that fewer passengers were renting headsets, since so many are now bringing their own personal entertainment devices onboard. The movies are offered on domestic flights of two and a half hours or longer. The change will affect some 196 Airbus A319s, 320s and 321s. Movies and music will still be available on transatlantic and Hawaii flights. US Airways’ domestic 737s don’t have in-flight entertainment.
