Several hotels invite visitors to sleep in the shadow of the Kremlin. The Hotel Metropol (Teatralny proezd 1/4, +7 499 501 7800) is an Art Nouveau masterpiece, replete with wrought iron and stained glass. On the opposite side of Red Square, Le Meridien Royal National (ulitsa Mokhovaya 15/1, +7 495 258 7000) is a veritable museum of frescoed ceilings and antique furnishings, offering glorious views over the Kremlin walls.
If you prefer a central location without the cramped quarters of historic hotels, make your reservation at the Park Hyatt Ararat (Neglinnaya ulitsa 4, +7 495 783 1234), an archetype of contemporary design and comfort.
Dubbed Moscow’s first boutique hotel, the Golden Apple (Malaya Dmitrovka 11, +7 495 980 7000) is located in the busy shopping district. A classical edifice fronts the street, but the interior is sleek and sophisticated.
The metallic skyscraper towering over the Moscow River south of the center is the swish Swissôtel (Kosmodamianskaya naberezhnaya 52, +7 495 787 9800). The unlikely location provides easy access to Domodedovo Airport. The top floor hosts the City Space Bar: Snag a table on the west side to witness a spectacular sunset over Moscow’s golden domes.
Also check out the Marriott Grand and Marriott Tverskya. Great locations right on Tverskya Ulitsa... and the both close to Metro stations.

I think "masterpiece" may apply to the lobby but I'd have to say that my room was more a "piece of work" than a masterpiece. It was tired and rundown and had a pervasive smell of old smoke. Worse still, were the hookers wo-manning the bar, the lobby and sitting on each floor outside the elevators. It's always nice to have a warm greeting when you return back to your hotel but there's a hard stop when it comes that sort of greeting!
