If you're looking for something different in local lodging, San Diego has a brand new (March 2007) boutique hotel in the Gaslamp Quarter (5th Avenue and F Street). It's called The Keating; it has just 35 rooms, and the interiors were created by Italy's Pininfarina design group, which has also done work for Ferrrari and Maserati.

This is a beautiful resort just 30 minutes from downtown San Diego and minutes from the beach in Carlsbad.
