Star Alliance goes to China
Two Chinese airlines join Star Alliance
In ceremonies at Beijing’s airport last week, China Airlines and Shanghai Airlines were both inducted as full members in the global Star Alliance, whose U.S. members include United and US Airways. With the two additions, the Star Alliance network now includes 19 airlines serving 897 destinations in 160 countries. Air China and Shanghai Airlines have added more than 40 domestic destinations in China to the network. Members of other Star Alliance airlines’ frequent flyer programs can now earn and spend miles on both Chinese carriers. An alliance spokesperson noted that connections to both Air China and Shanghai will be easier starting in March 2008, when all Star Alliance carriers serving Beijing Capital International Airport will consolidate into the new Terminal 3, and those operating at Shanghai-Pudong Airport will do the same at that facility’s new Terminal 2. Meanwhile, according to published reports, Star Alliance also decided last week to invite Air India to join.
