Q. I’m responsible for tracking our company travel budget, but it gets confusing with all the extra add-ons now for various airline services and amenities. Is there a central location that lists these things airline by airline?
A. There are several. The popular travel buying site kayak.com has a handy chart at www.kayak.com/airline-fees that covers most domestic and some international carriers. Another provider of fee charts is Farecompare; check them out at www.farecompare.com/resources/airline_fee_table/index.htm. And the web site SmarterTravel has a downloadable pdf chart at http://i.slimg.com/sc/sl/graphic/u/ul/ultimate-guide-to-airline-fees.pdf.
Q. I’d like to burn some miles on award travel; but with so many flights going out full these days, is there an easy way to track free seat availability instead of constantly checking the airline web sites?A. The New York Times last week noted that a travel web site called Yapta.com (Your Amazing Personal Travel Assistant) has started testing a service that will alert you when one of the flights you designate has an award seat open up. Airlines are constantly juggling their seat inventories for any given flight, so it does happen. The Yapta service currently works with Continental, Delta, United, Alaska and US Airways, and is being offered free during the test phase. The newspaper noted that another site, ExpertFlyer.com, offers a similar service for a fee of $9.99 as month. You can’t book through either one – that must be done with the airline -- but with early notice of award seat availability, you’ll have a leg up on other travelers, especially for close-in departures.
