Travel design flaws: Reader suggestions

Attention, designers: Business travelers have a few ideas to share.

Airplane seats should have handles on the corners along the aisle, similar to those on trains.

Aircraft lights should be moved away from the ceiling and add directional capability, so that on overnight flights, one light does not brighten the whole cabin.

Add a small light near the seatbelt sign that lights up when an announcement is being made, for passengers using headphones.

Aircraft should have a suitcase closet for people with large roll-aboards, so they don’t have to struggle putting large cases overhead.

Include a departures monitor in every bar and restaurant in the airport.

Jetways that operate automatically using sensors would save time and personnel.

Airport restaurants should have cubbies behind the hostess podium for bag storage, similar to airline lounges.

Keep rental-car buses company-specific. When they are airport-controlled, there is no one to complain to.

Not everyone arrives at the airport by taxi. Airports need places for people to wait with their friends and family. And not everyone who needs a drink or snack is flying: Put food service outside the secured area, too.

Now that most people have checked in before reaching the gate, wouldn’t it make more sense for airlines to have one continually staffed central desk for every four or five gates, rather than having one agent trying to both check boarding passes and run the desk?

Lack of outlets in hotel rooms is a major issue. Rather than having to completely redo the wall outlets, replace every light fixture in the room with one that has an outlet at its base.

Space is always tight in hotel bathrooms. Install double hooks on the door and hooks next to the sink for hand towels and toiletry bags.
