Carrier exempts Mileage Plus elites

It took a few weeks, but another major airline has finally matched American’s decision to charge economy class passengers a $15 fee for checking one piece of luggage. The airline is United, which said its new $15 fee will apply for tickets bought on or after June 13, for travel starting August 18 or later in the continental U.S. and to Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. As usual, United said that the fee will not be charged to persons flying in first class or business class, or who hold premier status in United’s Mileage Plus program or with Star Alliance. Checking a first and second bag will continue to be free on international fights, United said. The airline already charges a $25 fee for a second checked bag, and United said it is also increasing its fees for checking three or more bags, overweight items and special handling items from $100 to $125, or from $200 to $250, depending on the item. United predicted that the new first-bag fee will apply to one-third of its passengers, and it expects fees from first and second checked bags to produce extra annual revenues of $275 million. Customers can pay the fees at airport kiosks with a credit card, or at check-in counters with a credit card, cash or a check. “To ensure smooth operations at the airport, later this year United will have developed the ability for customers to pay for baggage fees via United.com when they check in online,” a spokesman said.
