United sets broad code-share pact with Aer Lingus

Deal also includes frequent flyer reciprocity

United Airlines and Irish carrier Aer Lingus announced a broad code-sharing and frequent-flyer pact. United now puts its code on Aer Lingus’ transatlantic flights to and from Ireland, and between Ireland and London Heathrow and Gatwick. The new code-share agreement, effective November 1, will cover all six of Aer Lingus’ U.S. gateways – JFK, Boston, Orlando, O’Hare, San Francisco and Washington Dulles – and United customers will “benefit from greater access to destinations in Ireland and to destinations in the U.K. and continental Europe through Aer Lingus’ extensive short-haul network,” United said. Also effective November 1, United’s Mileage Plus members will be able to earn miles on the United-Aer Lingus code-share routes, and spend them on any Aer Lingus flight. “The new partnership provides customers with a seamless booking process, coordinated baggage handling, and simplified reservations, ticketing and check-in,” United said. Meanwhile, Aer Lingus will put its code on United flights to some 200 U.S. destinations beyond its gateways, and Aer Lingus frequent flyers will be able to earn miles on select United domestic flights beginning in April 2009.
