Several domestic rotues will also be cut
The announcement earlier this year by United Airlines that it would ground up to 100 aircraft was slim on details as to the effect that would have on its schedules. But USA Today, citing an internal memo to United employees, reports that the carrier will eliminate at least seven domestic non-stop routes in early November, and the LA Times said United will discontinue two international non-stop routes from Los Angeles this fall: Hong Kong and Frankfurt. According to USA Today, United domestic routes being terminated include Chicago O’Hare-Spokane, O’Hare-San Jose, Denver-Charlotte, Los Angeles-Austin, LAX-Oakland, San Francisco-Atlanta and San Francisco-Toronto. The report also said United Express will end service at Kalamazoo, Mich., and Bloomington/Normal, Ill. Other reductions will come in the form of reduced frequencies in many of United’s domestic markets. The newspaper said United will eliminate one flight a day on 17 routes out of O’Hare and 14 from Denver, as well as six at Washington Dulles, five at San Francisco and four from Los Angeles. However, the LA Times report said that United will drop 20 percent of its LAX schedule, or 40 flights a day.
Meanwhile, the number of job cuts at United, previously estimated at 3,800, is now expected to grow to around 7,000 through 2009, the company said in releasing its second-quarter financial results. United reported a second-quarter net loss of $2.7 billion, as its jet fuel bill jumped by 53 percent for the quarter to $1.8 billion. On the bright side, United parent UAL Corp. announced that it has reached a preliminary agreement with Chase Bank to extend their co-branded credit card partnership. The deal means United will get $600 million from Chase to cover advance purchase of frequent flyer miles and the contract extension, the company said.
