More low-cost carrier service coming to San Francisco

Two low-cost carriers that recently started flying out of San Francisco International Airport have announced plans for new routes there. Virgin America said it will add San Diego as the newest destination from its San Francisco home base. The new service will begin February 12 with three flights a day, expanding to five a day on March 9. Meanwhile, low-cost powerhouse Southwest Airlines, which recently jumped into the highly competitive SFO-Los Angeles International market with eight daily roundtrips, said it will expand frequencies on that route by 50 percent on March 8, to a total of 12 flights a day. On the same date, Southwest will also introduce new non-stop service between San Francisco and Phoenix, with five daily roundtrips.
