If you have a free hour…

Afternoon tea at the Emirates Palace is highly recommended. The most expensive hotel in the world (it cost around $3 billion to build) is well worth a visit, and tea and scones provide the perfect excuse.

If you have a free day…

Trawl the Gold Souk in Madinat Zayed. If it’s camel-racing season (October to April), you can watch the breakneck dromedaries and robot riders do their thing at Al Wathba (check local press for timings); or practice your bunker shots at Al Ghazal sand golf course (00971 2 575 8040, alghazalgolf.ae), where a round costs a mere Dhs100 ($30).

If you have a free weekend…

It’s worth taking the two-hour drive down the road to Dubai to see what all the fuss is about. A one-way-trip taxi ride with Al Ghazal Transport (00971 2 444 9300) will cost you Dhs275 ($75). In Dubai, you can visit sail-shaped Burj Al Arab, the world’s only (self-rated) seven-star hotel, explore the Gold Souk or experience the strange sensation of skiing
in the desert on the indoor slope at Mall of the Emirates.
