Winter warm-up
style
September 2006
Essential accessories for your cold weather travel routine.
- Mix it up. Add panache to your winter wardrobe by choosing sophisticated paisleys, plaids and stripes that pick up a coordinating color from your coat. Solid- colored scarves with solid-colored outerwear may be traditional, but it’s also boring.
- Handy work. Treat your leather gloves like any other finely crafted accessory. Since they are exposed to the blustery elements as well, clean and treat them with a very small amount of the same leather cleaner and conditioner that you would your briefcase or dress shoes.
- The right size. The finest gloves are sized by number, just like your shoes. Have your hands measured the next time you visit a specialty store, so when you buy gloves, you’ll be able to find the perfect size. (The same goes for your head when shopping for high-quality hats.)
- Put ’ em away. As soon as you board the plane, put away your gloves, hat and scarf in your carry-on. That way you won’t lose them on the plane, and they will be ready once you land.
- Multitasking. Consider items with multiple functions. A stylish sheerling cape might become a luxurious blanket, and a beautiful cashmere scarf can add a dash of color, making it a fashion accessory.
- Think ahead. It’s not too early to imagine storing your woolens and cashmeres. Make a small investment in Space Bags (spacebag.com). They’ll keep everything moth-free and dry cleaner fresh, and are also effective closet and drawer organizers. They’re especially handy for world travelers who live in warm climates and use winter wear infrequently.
