US Airways ends a mileage perk; do you care?
Feb 15 2008, 2:33 PM EST US Airways frequent flyers will no longer get a minimum of 500 miles per flight; instead, they’ll just get actual miles flown (see this week’s story). Do you think other airlines will also eliminate this longstanding program perk? Or are award seats so hard to get now that you don’t pay much attention to mileage programs these days? Post your comments here. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I just had two trips with them, empty from Europe and their business lodge rooms, are a disgrace to the industry 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: US Airways ends a mileage perk; do you care?
Feb 19 2008, 3:40 PM EST Once again US Airways has shown its disdain for the frequent flier. No I do not think other airlines will match this self destructive policy change, in fact, United announced today that not only will they retain the 500 mile minimum mile accrual, they will continue to credit THEIR members 500 miles minimum even if they are on US code shares! US has a history of cutting corners on both customers and employees, while ignoring the underlying problems which face their operation. This move has insured the loss of yet more high yield revenue, as this move is seen as the breaking point for many who remained loyal but now want to leave. I am co chair of a frequent flier advocacy group, and our members have been very vocal about this proposed change. We hope we can be loud enough to get them to reconsider, but we think that's a long shot. Bottom line--it will cost them MUCH more than it could ever save. Do you find this valuable? |

Feb 19 2008, 3:44 PM EST The bad press and ill feelings engendered far outweigh any cost savings US Airways thinks it will gain. Why stick another thumb in the eye of your loyal customers - frequent fliers? Its just another example of US Airway's management arrogance. Do you find this valuable? |

Feb 19 2008, 3:47 PM EST Like all airlines, except for Southwest, they make it less and less attractive to be loyal. If they all ran their mileage programs like SW, they wouldn't have the build up of miles outstanding. Why airlines, especially United won't give you mileage trips or upgrades when we have been on flights that have plenty of empty seats, is beyond me. So keep cutting and it will free us up to stop considering miles and go for the best dollar deal. This will hurt them in the long run. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: US Airways ends a mileage perk; do you care?
Feb 19 2008, 3:49 PM EST I don't think USAirways is trying to cut down on the number of miles awarded as much as trying to cull the ranks of their higher status members (even though they didn't announce any changes yet to qualifications for Silver, Gold, Chairman's Preferred. Like the other commentors, USAirways equipment (especially the legacy America West fleet) is deteriorated and uncomfortable. They cut their first class sections on long haul/transcon domestic flights which further alienates their business travelers. One thing I will say for USAirways - I had accumulated a ton of miles and have been slowly liquidating them for free tickets and have not had a problem doing so unlike other reports across the industry with difficulty in redeeming the miles. Feb 19 2008, 3:50 PM EST I'm sure someone at US Airways thought this was a smart bottomline idea. Wrong! It's a miniscule gain to the airline compared to the ill will/bad PR generated. Do you find this valuable? |

Feb 19 2008, 5:09 PM EST US Worse (AIRWAYS) has proven itself again to be one of the most unfriendly uncompetetive airlines today. I'm surprised that The Star Alliance let them join. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: US Airways ends a mileage perk; do you care?
Feb 20 2008, 6:00 PM EST Not particularly. US Airways is a short-hop northeast airline except for the America West part of the company which has coast to coast flights. If you look at their schedules out of Charlotte and Philidelphia you will see most of their flights are less than 500 miles to towns like Albany-Philidelphia, Boston-Philidelphia, Washington-Philidelphia (you get the idea). For dismantled Pittsburgh and junior hub LaGuardia the picture is not much better, particuarly out of NYC. As stated before, their service is terrible (although better and improving very slowly under Parker's leadership) and right now they have a hard time attracting business travelers. I travel nearly every week out of NYC, and despite the fact US Airways is number one at La Guardia I never fly them - I fly Continental out of Newark or Delta out of JFK or LaGuardia since I know on those airlines they will get me where I need to go with the fewest problems. They lost me a long time ago as a gold/platnum member and I doubt they will get me back anytime soon. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: US Airways ends a mileage perk; do you care?
Feb 21 2008, 4:10 PM EST I *was* Chairmans Preferred for several years. I grew tired of the lousy service and frustrated at how much effort went into redeeming miles, even at my status level. If I fly enough to reach Chairmans status they should ask me what they need to do to make sure I take their airline to a destination for R&R. That's the way to keep my loyalty and business. It's the simple things that they just don't get. Now I go out of my way to *not* fly USAIRways. Do you find this valuable? |
