Will TSA's color-coded security lanes work?
Feb 22 2008, 2:13 PM EST
At Salt Lake City and Denver, the TSA is testing a new procedure whereby travelers choose a security lane based on one of three colors, depending on how familiar they are with the process, and/or if they have kids or other things that might slow them down (see this week’s story). Have you been through SLC or DEN recently to try this? If so, how did it work? If not, does this sound like an effective concept to you? Post your comments here. Do you find this valuable?

Haven't tried it, but typical for TSA in DEN to be doing inconsistent things with the rest of the US. ("We're keeping the terrorists off balance.") Considering that DEN's previous approach to handling elite flyers simply dumped them into the snail's pace "puffer" line, I expect that the diamond lane will do the same. In addition, Ma and Pa Kettle will seek out the shortest line, so unless there is a penalty for getting in the wrong line (at least on the slopes, black diamond trails tend to put Darwin to work), the line will accomplish very little -- and probably encourage the once a year "expert" skiers to join that line. I traveled through SLC...I thought the additional line was a waste of space. They had it segmented for families/special assistance and familiarity with TSA rules. The family line had one family, so they cruised right through, not sure what value that will add to security or speed. The lines were short enough that it really didn't matter at the time.

With my frequent flyer status and clear now in DEN, I cut through the "cheat lines" anyway. I'd rather just have the frequent flyer/clear lines for speed, as frequent flyers will speed through security anyway.

Do you have any idea what they're trying to accomplish? If it's speed, keep more lanes open, if it's security, then what's the difference?

Went thru DEN yesterday and it was not in place - perhaps it's only during peak hours (I was there at 5:30 am). Do you find this valuable?

i don't think it will make any difference. Human nature is always to pick the shortest or fastest moving line and I don't think this new system will change that. Do you find this valuable?
