All-business non-stop vs. economy one-stop
Mar 7 2008, 2:40 PM EST
Singapore Airlines said it will switch its non-stop New York-Singapore and LAX-Singapore services to all-business-class aircraft; economy and premium economy passengers will have to take one-stop flights (see this week’s story). Would you welcome all-business-class transpacific service? Do you think it is unfair to those who can’t pay (or aren’t allowed to pay) business class fares to have to take one-stops when they can currently fly non-stop? "Fair" is irrelevant. If the market will support an all business-class service and Singapore Airlines wants to make it seem special by making it the only non-stop, then that's their business decision. If there is a demand for more service for economy, and it makes economic sense, somebody else will fly it.

Now, according to the Cranky Flyer, its being done because the aircraft can't handle full weight for that flight distance, and so it is a choice between reducing the weight or making a stop. So they chose to take their lemon and make business class lemonade with it.

Considering the mediocre quality of business class service offered by our “now third world” domestic carriers such as United and American in business class to the pacific, I am not surprised of the Singapore announcement. The Asian carriers like Singapore have their act together and fully understand the value of their customers who pay thousands of dollars for a business class seat to Asia. You know when you buy your business class seat on a foreign flag carrier, your flight will be comfortable, more on time, better food and much better personal attention. So why would I fly American or United business for the same amount of dollars knowing I will get an old plane, smelly toilets, worn business class seats that do not recline, terrible food and poor attention? 0  out of 1 found this valuable. I recently took the LAX-Singapore in the executive economy section, and thought it was great service at a fair price. I am a business traveller, 100k+ miles per year, that is not allowed to book into business class. I will be sorry to see this option be removed.
I am a little surprised that they did not try a re-configuration of the aircraft first. As I remember, currently the plane is about 2/3 executive economy. I wonder why they did not try to simply change the mix to 1/2 executive economy?

As I said above - I am sorry to see this option go
