When will fare hikes affect your travel?
Apr 25 2008, 2:37 PM EDT The CEO of Delta said that with fuel prices at their current level, air fares will have to increase as much as 20 percent for carriers to break even (see this week’s story). Our question: Is your company, or your travel budget, starting to feel the squeeze of rising costs for air fares and related services? How much of an increase in air travel costs can you or your company absorb before you have to start cutting back on your trips? Post your comments here. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: When will fare hikes affect your travel?
Apr 28 2008, 4:38 PM EDT There are really two issues here that need to be addressed. 1. Higher prices will impact Corporate travel and that is not a new issue in times of economic turn down. Companies often cut back travel to reduce overhead costs and corporate expectations are modified to fit the problem much like after 9.11. I do not see it as a big deal. Many people would find it a relief. 2. More importantly, higher prices by the corporate traveler will be supported if it means the airlines will finally cover their costs and move to a profit level so they can fly newer planes, have better maintained planes, additional staff to repair, clean and fly their aircraft all lead to making flying a positive experience and not the horrendous experience it is today. Every consumer knows when they pull up to the pump to fill their gas tanks that prices have gone thru the roof and they buy gas. If the airlines were honest and said going forward every ticket price will reflect a separate fuel surcharge I suspect the consumer will understand because they see it at the gas pump. Apr 28 2008, 4:43 PM EDT Fare increases are just part of the equation: the bigger context is the current economic recession. So even though the cost of a ticket may be more, now more than ever it's important to be in front of clients and prospects. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: When will fare hikes affect your travel?
Apr 28 2008, 5:37 PM EDT I just booked a ticket for $800 between New York and Chicago. YIKES! Even as a business traveler these kinds of fares will impact my bottom line. Will I travel less? No, I have to be out there (even more so now). Do you find this valuable? |
