Miles just keep loosing thier value
Aug 7 2008, 3:18 PM EDT
Hi Guys Have you noticed that years ago, when you had to sit in the seat to earn the miles, they were worth something. Now, try to get a seat at the base rate going anywhere, The airlines have created so many programs to earn miles that they had to get creative to either make it so hard to get a seat or take so many miles. Looks like Delta has just made the miles worth a whole lot less.
My thoughts, earned miles in a seat ought to get you a guaranteed award seat with no blackouts, no restrictions, and no cost. Bonus miles, credit card miles, etc fall into catagory II which is the "Good Luck if you think you can use these miles" catagory.
How does everyone else feel?

I don't think the airlines have done anything to take seats away - they actually can't, there are laws and such that direct these programs. As you say, they have massively increased the ways to earn miles, so there are more people trying for each seat and they are becoming harder to get. I kind of like your idea - as a Platinum and Millionmiler, I have a ton of "earned" miles and a ton of credit card and hotel miles. I would have not problem managing the difference if it meant I had a real shot at first choice seats.

I think it's like a carrot and stick, everytime I get closer to an award, they increase the miles necessary to get a award. I'm really angry at DL for increasing the award to Europe to 60K from 50K miles, that's a huge dilution of my earned miles!! Once I use the miles I have, I'm going to forget flying on Delta. I feel cheated! Delta SUKS!
