Time for fees and surcharges to come down?
Sep 19 2008, 2:38 PM EDT
Some foreign airlines are starting to reduce their fuel surcharges as oil prices fall, and Air Canada is ending its $25 fee for a second checked bag – but United is doubling that fee, to $50 (see this week’s stories). Now that fuel costs are coming down, do you expect to see U.S. airlines eliminate some of their many new passenger fees, and/or drop fuel surcharges? Sadly, I think that many airlines will just take advantage of their customers getting used to such fees and they'll remain. Aside from the surcharges and the fees, American Airlines has explicitly stated that their schedule cutbacks will remain indefinitely despite the drop in fuel prices. 2  out of 3 found this valuable. I do not think the domestic carriers will cut the fees, particularly when United is reporting how much extra revenue is being generated. They should now charge $100 for a carry-on. Boarding is even worse now with more and more people bringing on the maximum size carry-on. I have been told to stow my smaller carry-on under the seat to make room in the overhead. So much for leg room. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

First, Air Canada's prices are, I understand, government regulated and higher than most other airlines, as airlines from other countries only have limited landing rights too. It is not fair to compare. Canadians close to US borders, usually will drive across the border to start a trip on a US carriers, less expensive, even with the extra charges. Since this quesiton was posted, oil prices are going up again. But thanks to my Alexander Proudfoot Inc. consultant training in 1978, my wife and I have been taking trips for years with one 45 inch (expands 4 inches) carry-on and one personal item--to include cruises and trips of 30 days, or more. A lost bag can ruin a vacation or business trip. For example, on vacation/cruise I pack one suit or tux, 7 ot 8 changes of underwear, 2 pair of pants, 2 shorts, 3 or 4 golf shirts, 2 dress shirts, pair of sandals, dress shoes, and athletic shoes (we wear--plus sport coat and and overcoat if needed). Oversize computer bag holds meds and more. We just find laundry once every 8 to 10 days. Wife uses a lot of silk or silk like clothes, and usually has extra room in her carry-ons too. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?
