Are one-way award tickets useful to you?
May 15 2009, 12:29 PM EDT | Post edited: May 15 2009, 12:29 PM EDT
American Airlines says its AAdvantage program is the first major frequent flyer plan to start offering one-way award ticketing (see this week’s story). Our question: How useful do you think this option will be for you? Under what circumstances would you be likely to cash in miles for a one-way award ticket, or to book separate one-way award segments in different classes of service, instead of a roundtrip ticket? Post your comments here. 4  out of 4 found this valuable. Do you?

This would be valuable. I have used "one way" frequent flyer tickets before, but "threw away" the return by not ever using it. Currently we are planning a US car tour with my wife and son returning home on part of a ticket and booking the rest of the trip for a much later date, say two months later. 4  out of 4 found this valuable. Yes. We would use them for flying into one location and out of another.

Very usefull. We often take tours that fly to one airport and back from another. that is why we use Alaska Air a lot.

One way would be wonderful!!!! You don't realize how many times I fly to pickup an aging relative or student child to drive them home. I currently have to book a round trip and then trash the return portion. Even better that I could use my miles.

Absolutely! Within 24 hours of learning of this change, I booked a one-way First Class award ticket from New York to Phoenix, the first leg of a trip of which the ultimate return will be by Amtrak from San Francisco. This is a great innovation. There are any number of situations in which award travel one-way makes sense, as well as cases in which traveling in different classes on different legs suits the passenger. This is one of the few recent changes that's a real boon to frequent flyers. Hats off to AA! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?
