Have you been scammed or shaken down overseas?
Jul 23 2009, 2:08 PM EDT
A report from the BBC says that international airline passengers flying out of Bangkok are being victimized by a scam in the airport’s duty-free area, forced to pay thousands of dollars to police after being falsely arrested for theft (see this week’s story). Our question: During your travels around the world, have you ever been the victim of a similar scam, shakedown or bribery request from officials? Post your comments here.

Never have been on my 30 or so years of traveling around the globe, including Thailand where I go almost every year. I always browse since there are so many duty free shops and very nice ones. It must have started lately as I had never heard of it. Good to know though as I intend to go back in December.

Yes, I know of many instances of shakedown/bribery requests, and it's going on right now. It's perpetuated by the unquenchable thirst for power and money by those controlling the US Congress and the White House, and while it's been going on for years, it's totally out of control right now. The current crowd in Washington feels that they have the right and authority (not sure from whom) to extract whatever funds private citizens have. Karl Marx is smiling.

Flying to Bangkok from Beijing we got scammed by Sri Lanka Airlines staff. We had bought our tickets at the official Sri Lanka Airlines website using credit card. While I had my credit card on me but my friend had not. They refused to take her passport as ID and made her repurchase her ticket because she did not have her credit card on her. When confronted about this the Beijing staff pretended to not speak English which backfired and proved as false, since they suddenly could when I addressed them in Chinese (I am fluent). We contacted Sri Lanka Airlines HQ and they refuse to refund any of the tickets. Do you find this valuable? |
