Have you been scammed by a taxi driver at the airport?
Dec 4 2009, 10:33 AM EST
In the news this week is a report that New York authorities started a crackdown on taxi and limo drivers illegally soliciting passengers at LaGuardia and JFK airports (see this week’s story). Our question: Have you ever been scammed or ripped off by a taxi or private car driver at an airport anywhere in the world? Tell us (briefly) what happened, and where. Post your comments here.

Yes I have been ripped off by both because I was tired or not thinking. The NYC airports are no worse than any other airport in the world. All major airports have dishonest taxi drivers and limo drivers. If I am on business I do town car service to avoid the rip off's.Internationally, the taxi drivers love to rip off Americans. So I plan accordingly. 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Not an airport, but effectively the same thing. Took the Eurostar from London to Brussels Midi. Arrived late and tired. Grabbed a cab from the taxi line. Gave my destination and never noticed that the cabbie didn't pull the flag and that the meter was covered by a cloth. When I arrived at my hotel, the fare was revealed and was roughly double what I had paid in the morning. Unfortunately, it was a small hotel and did not have a doorman who could have argued with the cabbie on my behalf.

Chicago is doing the same thing. They are getting very aggressive about taking on scam artists who grab people out of bag claim. Interestingly, I have been approached many times in NYC, but never in Chicago, even when I have walked out to get my ride. The issues in Chicago are insane fares and unlicensed (and uninsured) vehicles.

Yes I was given a flat rate of 45 dollars by the people outside the airports in NYC who sets everything up and once on the way the cab driver told me it was too far and that he would drop me off to catch the train. I paid him 60.00 and he refused to give me any change!!!!

My daughter and her friend have just returned from New York after having a 5 night holiday. When they arrived they were met at the airport by a 'taxi driver' who asked if they were looking for a taxi. They replied yes and asked how much it was. He stated $75. They assumed that was the correct price and got into his cab. When they reached their hotel he charged them $160. He told them the quoted price was per person, anfd it was a rough cost. I find this despicable for taxi drivers to be doing this to tourists, especially when they're supposed to be the best drivers around.

That is ridiculous. Chiago taxi drivers are the lowest paid in the country. As far as unlicensed and uninsured vehicles that is also not true. The drivers go through a kiosk where they hand over tickets with MPEA stamps affixed. They pay $2 a piece for these stickers and must show ID when purchased. They cannot get down to the terminals without one of these tickets. All taxis and commercial limos must have them.
