Frequent flyer miles expiring
Feb 21 2007, 9:01 AM EST
A friend told me that some of his airline miles expired recently, but I don't think mine ever have. What's the story here? Do some airlines points expire and others don't (if so which ones)? How can I tell? Are airlines allowed to just take them away like that -- especially if its so hard to actually use them (so many restrictions, etc.)? And what about American Express MR points -- do they expire? 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

You can check the web site of your preferred frequent flyer program to learn about all the program rules and restrictions. It used to be that in most major airlines' programs, miles expired if you showed no activity in your account for three years. But recently, some airlines have shortened that period to 18 months. If you have a significant number of miles in a particular airline's program, it's a good idea to know the expiration rules and to do something to save your miles. "Activity' in your account can be lots of things - it doesn't mean you have to fly on that airline. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?
