Should you pay for checked bags and coffee?
Mar 9 2007, 3:27 PM EST
Spirit Airlines in June will start to charge for all checked bags and for all in-flight beverages – even coffee. Do you think other U.S. airlines will follow Spirit’s lead in a quest for new revenue sources? Do you think Spirit’s policy is a good idea, providing it means lower fares? Would you base your selection of an airline on whether or not it charges extra for services that are free at other carriers? 2  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

Ridiculous concept for those of us that travel 40 to 50 times a year and have a hard enough time being reimbursed for expenses. While airlines must certainly cut costs to be competetive, what is next...if you get a seat inside the plane it costs more than if you ride on the wings. Come on!!! 2  out of 2 found this valuable. This is as ridicules as raising the fare on subways and the tolls on bridges and tunnels. Whose fault is it that the company has to spend millions more each year on things such as fuel, labor cost and salaries? Certanly not the customers fault! But we are made to pay each and every time there is a fare hike or the price of fuel goes up. Have you looked at your ticket lately? The taxes for the tickets today are almost the same as the ticket price itself! Forget about checked bags and coffee. If you let them (and you know you will) they're going to start charging you (i.e., a service charge) for things like, oh, I don't know, FLYING ON THEIR PLANES. Mark my words.

Not under the current fare sturcutre when you have people paying from $50 to $2,500 sititng next to each other. Each individual airline needs to decide who they want to be. The big 5 want to be all things for all people on the same aircraft. It doesn't work.

For those for whom airfare is the only driver, then this could make some sense. But for those of us who extensively travel for business and/or pleasure, the airlines are going to have to decide which way they will go: Low fare of full service. I don't mind paying for full service IF I GET IT, but too often today, we pay for full service and receive low fare treatment. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

It's NOT about lower fares. The airllines' last concern is how to lower YOUR fare; it;'s how to increase THEIR margin. Sounds to me like they're hoping to put the handlers' union out of business, and to gouge the traveler for every extra nickel and dime. Next they'llbe charging you to use the bathroom. It's long past time for Congress to step in and draft a traverlers' Bill of Rights

Next thing is to charge for carry on bags. When will this end? Service is poor on most airlines. I can live without airline food and beverages - but charging for luggage !!!. I will fly only on airlines that don't charge for checked bags and treat passengers well. Spirit Airlines, you lost a valuable customer.

I'd like to see things go the other way and have all roll aboard bags checked. Computer bags and other high cost items belong in the cabin, not shirts, sox, etc. I would not fly a carrier who charged me for the checked bags if I have other options. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I will not book any flights on Spirit Airlines in future. If they have to resort to charging for checked luggage and all in-flight beverages, I have to assume that they are in financial trouble and are also cutting costs where I can't see them, like maintenance or quality control.

Spirit has gone too far. Last week I missed the first leg of my flight and they cancelled the entire flight because they said I didn't give them 24 hours notice. It was a non-refundable ticket and I was able to catch a one-way flight with Southwest. I never thought I was expected to tell them I missed it -- wasn't it obvious? The next day I found myself stuck because they emailed me stating they had cancelled my return flight and I would not get any refund. I had to re-purchase my seat at a much higher rate in order to return home. Thier response is that the flights are linked and if you aren't going to make the first flight, they need to charge a fee [in advance] to re-do the paperwork for the return flight. I also found that they are now tagging carry-on luggage so the next obvious step is for them to start charging for the tagging service. Do you find this valuable?

It is still a matter of total cost to get from point a to point b. How it is charged may be a hassle, but the bottom line is cost and convenience. Do you find this valuable?

No -- as well as drinks - since we are not allowed to take liquids aboardan aircraft- this is becomming a real rip off by the airlines - Service is already at low quality for the price of flying & there are areas one has no other choice for transportation

I think it's a good idea. Airlines should consider charging for oxygen in the plane. They need a device that counts how much oxygen is being inhaled by each passenger and work on some kind of fare structure. That ALONE will resuce the ailing airline industry. Also, airlines should think about charging for extras in bathrooms: toilet paper ($4-6 per wipe); facial issue ($1 per sheet); water for handwashing ($5-7 per second of use). Come on airlines, there's BILLIONS in revune that you're simply wasting! What about implementing a charge every time you hit your flight attendent call button ($8); every time you say hello and get a hello back from a flight attendent that could be $6. When you leave the plane and the captain says, "Thanks," the airlines can charge $5. "Thanks a lot": $10. The potential is endless! Do you find this valuable?

Let's not forget adding a landing tax.

Why shouldn't airlines be compensated fairly each time they land us safely?

I would never fly this airline again if this were the case...... customer service is poor enough these days, that is just robbery.
I will drive to vacations from now on.

No way will I ever fly an airline that is that cheap. I am sure other will follow since there is no limit to corporate greed. But if they do then I will use my FF miles for reward tickets and then never set foot an an airplane again for as long as I live. We need government regulation of the airline industry NOW.

Time and tradition has it that bags and complementary drinks are included. The services are worth a lot more than the $5. - $10.- the airline is saving. I would not select Spirit based on saving this amount of money.
