Is the airport experience getting worse?
May 29 2007, 9:40 AM EDT
A new survey from J.D. Power and Associates finds a growing dissatisfaction among passengers with their airport experience. It found that the three best-liked large airports are DFW, Detroit and Atlanta. What’s your favorite airport – or your least favorite – and why? Post your comments here. Clearly, J.D. Power didn't ask me. I think domestic airports are getting better, with more shops that I use, and better restaurants. I haven't lost any baggage in recent years, but I do resent the some times long wait for checked baggage. My favorite airports are Heathrow and Frankfurt, because the have the best lounges.

Depends on which airport you're at. Worst is Philadelphia. Old and dirty and disjointed. Others that require concourse changes, long walks, tram rides, etc. follow right behind Philly. Don't care about quality restaurants. Don't go to the airport to eat. Best airport - Kansas City. Designed for the flying public. No massive security entry points with long serpentine lines. Ticket counters and baggage claim are a few feet from the gates. Other good large airports - Detroit (Northwest's new terminal) and Pittsburgh. My favorites are any smaller airport! Avoid those hubs when at all possible.

I agree that smaller airports are preferable in general. I recently tried flying out of Westchester County Airport in White Plains, NY to avoid the big three NY area airports. The intimacy and (lack of walking distance from ticket counters to gates cannot be beat, but there were a couple of downsides. The airport terminal's capacity to handle travelers has not kept up with the number of flights. The one lounge was jammed with passengers in the common area for the four gates. Also, other than a beverage and a snack vending machine, there was no food service beyond security. While the security lines were quite short, it would not have been a big deal to go back out to get something to eat, it was not what I expected. Also, one of the presumable benefits of small airports is the availability/cost of parking. Because the parking garage is under construction, the airline did a good job of warning passengers that parking was limited, so we made other arrangements. Do you find this valuable?
