Bring back slot controls
Sep 4 2007, 8:48 PM EDT The airlines are in a game of chicken with one antoerher, and we, the business travele, suffers because of it. None of them will curtail their schedules, claiming they'll lose business to other airlines that offer more convenient schedules. Having fouled their own nest -- and ours -- I think the airlines have collectively shown they cannot be trusted to oeprate responsibly. It's time to bring back slot controls -- with an added kick or two. For example, no airline should be allowed to control more than 40% of the slots at any given airport, in order to foster a decent amount of competition (s long fortress hubs, hello better fares and service). Regional aircraft with 69 or less sets should be "charged" two slots, since they carry half (or less) the number of passengers that standard transports like 737s and Airbus 319s/320s, yet take up about the same amount of airspace. Airlines that operate on-time, and perform well -- as measured by DOT consumer comments for things like lost baggage and customer service complaints -- would be rewarded with more slots. Do you find this valuable? |

Sep 5 2007, 9:30 AM EDT Is that a system that we've used before? Do you find this valuable? |
