Do mileage programs have a future?
Nov 5 2007, 9:31 AM EST
Airlines are quietly imposing new restrictions and limitations in their mileage programs (see this week’s story). Have you noticed any changes recently in your favorite mileage programs that you consider unfair? Do you think airlines do a good enough job informing members about rule changes? Long term, do you think additional restrictions on mileage programs will render them useless? Post your comments here. Do you find this valuable?

No. On a recent international flight on Delta, paid for in part with frequent flyer miles and confirmed 5 months in advance, my wife and I and another couple travelling with us were held up at the airport and told that we had to come up with twice as many frequent flier miles or Delta would not honor our already confirmed seats. At the time of booking, we had extensive discussions with Delta representatives regarding the number of points and the mechanism of transfer and were assured that the reservations had been booked and completely paid for. The experience at the airport was upsetting and embarassing to us, and a dishonest misrepresentation on the part of Delta. With complicated schedules having been set up, and additional expenditures for tours, events, and hotels already having been made, we had no choice but to come up with the additional miles. I felt that we were being swindeled - bait and switch? 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I belong to a lot of programs and it seems most U.S. airlines are now "expiring" miles faster. I've started burning miles at a more rapid rate because frankly, I think it's going to get tougher to use them in the years ahead. Do you find this valuable?
