Should Delta and United merge?
Nov 16 2007, 1:00 PM EST Despite their denials, news reports indicate Delta and United may be discussing a merger, which would create the nation’s largest airline – reportedly to operate under United’s identity (see this week’s story). Nov 19 2007, 9:02 PM EST I flew Delta a lot in 1977/1978 service was the best...no recent first-hand knowledge, but hear a lot of my friends and relatives complain about its service, automated phone system, and reservation agents, i.e., its agents ask you to repeat everything you say two or three times and then they repeat it back, "...as I understand you want..." A few minutes later, they repeat it again, "...as I understand you..." Many just give/hang-up and book with another airline. If the merger would improve, customer service, on-time performance and eliminate middle seats (dreaming) it would be great day for airline travel. Then again, Delta is part of the Skyteam Alliance, as is Nortthwest, but not United, and Northwest and Delta are already sharing flights... 0 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Nov 26 2007, 7:02 AM EST This would make the combined airline almost twice as big as AA. The big question would be what from each airline will they model in the new company. I think company moral from Delta is the better choice since that flows over into customer service and many important impacts on travelers. The voice automated/India customer service of United has to be improved. Delta's tiny seats should not be retained. I am hoping they would take the best of each but experience usually shows different results. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Nov 28 2007, 3:13 PM EST I think the US Airways-Delta failed merger was a missed opportunity. I think there's so much overlap in operations with a Delta-United merger that I don't see me benefitting from a merger. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jan 13 2008, 10:22 PM EST Absolutely not. Strategically, Continental is a better fit for United with its Houston and Newark hubs complimenting United's route structure very nicely. Delta and Northwest make a lot more sense, and would be easier to pass through regulators, even though Delta might have to spin off its Cincinnati hub. Also, Delta and Northwest are in the same global alliance. Do you find this valuable? |
